Inventors

The leadership of the Filipino Inventors Federation has shifted from Metro Manila, home to most of the country’s top scientists and inventors, to Davao, home to the most active inventors group in the country.
Three Davaoeno inventors were elected September 30 to lead the Federation, which groups together 25 inventors associations throughout the Philippines.
Congratulations to Sam [...]

My sked for today includes a meeting at 9 a.m. with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce & Industry and a consultant of the Civil Aviation Authority on the proposal to convert into a cargo and trade hub the old airport facilities at Sasa.
The old airport is idle for the past four years now and [...]

My house as rebel camp?

Press Statement
October 3, 2008

I have received reports this morning that one radio station in Davao City reported that NPA rebels “were being housed” at the “residence” of one Peter Lavina in Tamayong.

I do not know of any other Peter Lavina in Davao City. So, the alleged report must be referring to me [...]

Eid’l Fitr

The City Council will not hold its regular session today to prepare for the Eid’l Fitr celebration ending the holy month of Ramadan. The national government has declared October 1 as a non-working holiday to join Filipino Muslims in marking the end of fasting.
We greet our Muslim brothers and sisters a happy Hari Raya!
On Thursday [...]

From my inbox are two interesting proposals:
Elmer Soriano, my mentor in wikislation, is now at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge. He is attending a course on Leadership for a Networked World. He is cooking up new ways to promote e-governance and e-citizenship and he wants me to collaborate with him. I said [...]

School games

The University of Mindanao commenced with its annual Intramural Games yesterday. Before the opening parade, the faculty club at the College of Arts & Sciences held the induction of its new set of officers. I administered their oath.
Kudos to Prof. Randy Ponteras for the very active faculty club. Best wishes to all the competing teams. [...]

Roads and bridges to nowhere

The Philippines is catching up fast in aping the presidential derby in the US.
The “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska is a hot topic pitting Democrats against Republicans.
Here, there’s a rumble by several presidential wannabes on the “road to nowhere” in Metro Manila.
Senator Ping Lacson exposed the double funding of the controversial road in the 2008 [...]

Admirable airline

Here’s another reason why Singapore Airlines is a class above the rest.
Starting today, it would reduce fuel surcharges on certain flights. Just when other major airlines are starting to squeeze passengers pocket dry with luggage fees, Singapore Airlines is rolling back on fuel levy as the price of crude oil plummets from its $147 per [...]

Searching for relatives of Augusto T. Garcia

Six days ago, I received an email from the St. Faustina Divine Mercy Parish in Paniqui, Tarlac seeking help to locate the relatives of the late Augusto T. Garcia.
A son by the name of Joshua was known to be in Davao with Rivera Village in Bajada as the last known address. I sent my driver [...]

Obama-Palin Dream Team

I guess the only way for basketball stars to grab more gold medals in the Olympics is to introduce more variety to the sports in the future summer games. For instance, one-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-three, and mixed doubles and triples. Maybe, there should also be a slam dunk, free throw line and three-point shootout.
Adidas has popularized, [...]

Numbers

12.5 Percent - August inflation rate, the highest in 17 years.
1.415 Trillion Pesos - proposed budget for next year, described by the government as a “crisis budget.” I say its an “election budget.”
3 Billion Pesos - estimated budget for a presidential candidate in 2010. This would make the winner and loser/s law violators. Election laws [...]

We could be disqualified in London 2012

I am leaving this morning for a two-day seminar at the Pearl Farm Resort off Samal Island. I would not be able to post tomorrow morning.
As chair of the City Council Committee on Trade, Commerce & Industry, I am leading a four-member City Council group to meet with officials of the Davao City Chamber of [...]

Merdeka

Happy Independence Day to Malaysia. Merdeka!

Inquirer not precise, specific, accurate

Headline: Davao bus blast kills 6
Is it not better to be precise and specific? Digos bus blast kills 6
Davao and Digos have the same five letters and would surely fit in the front of the Inquirer. But why did the Inquirer editors use Davao instead of the more accurate Digos as the site of the [...]

List of naugthy, nice

Yehey, the “ber” months are here. September, October …
Christmas is just round the corner. Time to play Santa and start listing who’s naughty, who’s nice.
Let me start mine:
Naughty
1. Jun Lozada, golfer, “probinsyanong Instik,” now an expert on Mindanao peace;
2. Joey de Venecia, bidding loser, soon to be congressional candidate
3. Engr. Adarna, owner of Queensland undertaking [...]

From champion to goat

What a difference a year make. From last year’s champion to today’s goat.
I really feel sorry for Filipino golfer Juvic Pagunsan. He had a brilliant birdie and eagle finish last year for a -19 to win the inaugural Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational. Today, he had a disappointing four bogeys and a double bogey in his [...]

Now he is an expert on Mindanao!

Ha ha ha! This is interesting.
Former President Joseph Estrada revealed last Friday that Rodolfo Lozada Jr., the Senate’s star witness in the cancelled national broadband network (NBN) deal with ZTE Corp. of China, has sought his help as his relationship with the civil society group Black and White Movement (BWM) has turned sour.
Estrada, who visited [...]

My job today

Arrggghhh!
There’s no net service in my house this morning. I was disgusted.
I left early to kick off the cycling race from City Hall to Calinan, the fruit orchard district nortwest of downtown Davao. The bike race is part of the Kadayawan festival with a number of other sports tournaments also widing up this weekend.
A little [...]

Queensland: SP no, Mayor yes

Mayor Rody Duterte appeared jolly last night as he met members of the City Council for a consultation. Tagging along with the mayor were members of the local media. So, much of what we discussed at the Grand Men Seng Hotel from 9 p.m. to midnight would surely be in the news in the coming [...]

I sent this letter to the Sultan of Brunei last year:

February 22, 2007

the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Warmest Greetings of Peace!

Re attached News Item on Brunei’s plan for a Halal Food Processing Plant:

New Olympic events for GRP

In the midst of finger-pointing and the blame game …

it’s back to square one for Team Philippines as the debacle in Beijing takes center stage at next week’s sports summit of sports leaders.
I strongly suggest that the country, aka GRP (to align with GB, host of the 2012 Games), concentrate in the following events where [...]

Tits for tat

Kosovo declared its independence early this year with the backing of the EU and the US to the objection and consternation of Serbia and Russia.
Yesterday, Russia supported the independence of not one but two breakaway regions of Georgia - Abkhazia and South Ossetia - to the objection and condemnation of the EU and US.
Russia had [...]

I represented Vice Mayor Sara Duterte and delivered the welcome remarks. Our guests include the consuls from Japan and Malaysia, government and police officials, war veterans and representatives from many civil [...]

Perfect score for China

I salute China for the successful Beijing Olympic Games. What started on a lucky date 08-08-08 ended up for the host getting another lucky number - a perfect score, 100, - for its total medal haul. It has the most number of Olympic champions at 51 gold medalists. It also earned 21 silvers and 28 [...]

Vice President

I received my Barack email about his VP choice at 9:37 a.m. ET.
Friend –
I have some important news that I want to make official.
I’ve chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.
Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois — the same place this campaign began [...]

Feeding our future

During the food crisis early this year, we batted for one common sense solution, that is, to plant more food crops to increase supply and stabilize the spiraling price increases.
The national government responded with a number of measures to address the crisis including massive subsidies and reviving the so-called “corporate farming” to entice big [...]

Holiday economics?

It’s another holiday in Davao today due to the Kadayawan Festival. This is the second non-working holiday since Monday, which marked Ninoy Aquino Day. This coming Monday, August 25, is also a non-working holiday to commemorate Heroes Day on August 30.
So, in the ten-day period between August 16 to 25, we have only three working [...]

Ninoy: hindi nag-iisa

The Liberal Party is leading the commemoration of three significant events today - Plaza Miranda bombing in 1971, Ninoy Aquino assassination in 1983 and honoring living heroes via the Ramon Magsaysay awards.
Here are today’s activities as announced by LP Secretary-General Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya:
8 a.m. - Wreath-laying at the tomb of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, [...]

US silent on MILF terrorism

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney is one of the most active enyoys in the Philippines and a favorite of the media. She openly expresses her ten-cents’ worth on almost all major issues in the country not just the bilateral relations between Washington and Manila.
In the on-going strife in Mindanao, she has a mouthful of things to [...]

Monday blues

My post on swimmer Michael Phelps was inadvertently deleted yesterday morning. Arrgghh! I really did not know what happened except that I was in a hurry to leave after posting and closed my laptop.
Anyway, I wrote about the greatest Olympian of our lifetime having more medals in two Olympics than the Philippines (population over 90 [...]
