My copy of the book “She’s a Bad Motorcycle: Writers on Riding” arrived the other day and was struck by what Sonny Barger, a founding member of the Oakland chapter of Hell’s Angels, said about Harley Davidson motorcycles.
First, Berger’s cred: Among other things, in 1988, Barger was sentenced for conspiring to blow up the clubhouse of a rival motorcycle club, the Outlaws in Louisville, Kentucky, and spent 4 years in federal prison in Arizona.
Oakland Hells Angels president Cisco Valderrama on Berger: If anybody deserves anything in this whole bike-riding world, it’s Sonny. He led the way. You see people wearing these fucking patches, “Ride to live, live to ride.” Yeah, right. As soon as the shit comes down, their bike is the first thing they sell. Sonny is the one who pushed the bike-riding lifestyle. There wasn’t an outlaw type of lifestyle as there is today until he created it.
Berger on Harley Davidson motorcycles: Hell’s Angels started riding Harley-Davidsons mostly because, unlike today, they didn’t have much choice. In 1957, it was either ride a Harley or settle for a Triumph or BSA. They’d already stopped building Indians. It’s always been important for Hell’s Angels to ride American-made machines. In terms of pure workmanship, personally I don’t like Harleys. I ride them because I’m in the club, and that’s the image, but if I could I would seriously consider riding a Honda ST1100 or a BMW. We really missed the boat not switching over to the Japanese models when they began building bigger bikes. I’ll usually say, “Fuck Harley-Davidson. You can buy an ST1100 and the motherfucker will do 110 miles per hour right from the factory all day long.”

div align=”justify”I’m in a noisy internet cafe in Datu Odin Sinsuat town, Maguindanao surrounded by students who skipped classes from a nearby public high school. They are playing net games while eardrum-puncturing Slapshock, a Pinoy rap group, and some Emo band blast from their speakers, simultaneously, punctuated by cuss words in Maguindanaon. I’m in the town to beef up my research for my first narrative full-length film, Tabunaway endu Mamalu. It resolves around the two brothers -ancestors of the Maguindanaon, Iranun, Tiduray, and Manobo- who lived in the 1500s. The film also delves on the coming of Shariff Kabunsuan, the prince from Johore who was the responsible for the spread of Islam in Mindanao, as well as the founder of the sultanates. /divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/19879990-6879572379608572946?l=morofilm.blogspot.com’//div

Someone almost got the right answer. But that’s just almost, almost is still different from the correct answer. But almost is “almost” and [...]

“Once upon a time, there was a good-for-nothing young man named Batugan who was tasked to watch over a herd of cows. In the morning, as soon as he reached the fields, he would count the cows. One, two, three, four, five… fourteen. Fourteen cows grazing on the green meadow. Batugan would then repair to a nearby mango tree and sleep under its shade until late in the afternoon. Before he returned home, he would count the cows again. One, two, three, four, five, six…fourteen. All cows accounted for.
Batugan did this everyday. But one afternoon, on his way back home, he counted the cows. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, thirteen. Thirteen cows. “There must be a mistake,” Batugan whispered to himself. So he counted the cows again. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, thirteen. Only thirteen cows. “Where could the one missing cow be?” Batugan searched the meadow and the forest nearby, but there was no cow there. He went to the river. Still, there was no cow. It was getting dark. Batugan started to worry.”
This is the story idea of a still non-existent film accidentally brought to life by a typographical error in the schedule of events of the ongoing Sine Rehiyon Film Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In the schedule, the title of my film reads: Ang Paghahanap ni Batugan sa Bakang Ibinaon sa Bundok. The correct title should have been Ang Paghahanap ni Bantugan sa Bangkang Ibinaon sa Bundok, an allusion to the traditional belief that the war in Mindanao will only end when Bantugan (the hero of Darangen) is reunited with his boat.

Two weeks ago, the exhibition Designing Peace opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. Among the artworks featured is an installation that I did using drawings made by school children in Pikit, Cotabato, interspersed with texts from my poem and a recording of the children explaining their work in front of the camera.
The exhibition will run until June 2009. The Museum is located at the ground floor of the School of Art and Design, La Salle College of St. Benilde, P. Ocampo Street, in Pasay City.
